‘120 Bahadur is a Story That Exemplifies The Selflessness of The Soldier’

The war film 120 Bahadur is based on the true story of how a group of Indian soldiers bravely faced the Chinese attack despite being greatly outnumbered during the 1962 War and wreaked havoc before being martyred. Producer Farhan Akthar explains how stories of sacrifice inspire him

What brought Param Vir Chakra winner Shaitaan Singh to your attention?

I had heard the name Shaitaan Singh but nothing else. Director Razneesh Ghai is an army boy and had heard the story of the Battle of Rezang La from his father and brother, who were Army men. This is something taught in the army. I liked the way Razzy told the story. I’m really surprised this story hasn’t been filmed before. Chetan Anand’s Haqeeqat touched on this war but focused on the larger war and the Indochina aspect. 120 Bahadur focuses on this war and Shaitaan Singh Bhati. Rajeev Menon, who wrote the script, has structured it very well.

Why is the Param Vir Chakra winner named Shaitaan?

Shaitaan was not his real name; This is how his family changed him. He legally wanted to return to his original name, but his senior officer told him: “You are an officer and a soldier. If you go to war, you will always be remembered because your name is so unique.”

What is your takeaway from this experience?

Love, respect and honor for the country and for being in the army, these are important things. People who protect our borders and put the country first deserve respect. There is a high probability that they will not return, but they still take this risk for the love of their country. It’s probably not even considered a risk; It’s seen as an opportunity to do something, to be part of something bigger than yourself. My takeaway from this is to not be selfish; It’s the selflessness that comes when you wear a uniform.

Why didn’t you use Lataji’s quote ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’? He sang this song especially for the Indo-China war in 1962.

Yes he did. But I felt like this was an opportunity to create something new, to be part of the Universe full of songs. And I think Shreya Ghosal has done an incredible job.
