Mexico World Cup Celebration Ends In Chaos After Car Injures 17

MEXICO CITY, June 25 (Reuters) – More than a dozen people were injured when a vehicle passed through a crowd in the popular tourist resort of Cabo San Lucas during Mexico’s World Cup match victory celebrations on Wednesday night, Los Cabos city hall said.

“According to preliminary information, the vehicle was surrounded by a group of people and, for reasons to be determined by the competent authority, drove through the crowd, causing injuries to many people,” the city hall added.

The statement stated that a total of 17 people, including the arrested driver, received medical treatment.

An unverified video has spread on social media showing a car crashing into a crowd. Reuters could not immediately confirm its authenticity.

“I would like to express our deepest solidarity with the affected people and their families following the unfortunate events that occurred tonight,” Los Cabos Acting Mayor Jose Manuel Larumbe said, promising to keep the public informed about authorities’ investigations into the incident.

Located on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is one of Mexico’s most luxurious tourist destinations and one of the two main cities within the Municipality of Los Cabos, which includes San Jose del Cabo and the resort corridor connecting them.

Celebrations broke out across Mexico on Wednesday evening after Mexico beat the Czech Republic 3-0 in the final match of the World Cup group stage.
