2 things successful couples do over the holidays

For couples, “the holidays are a scary time” because they often require you to reveal a new side of yourself to your partner, she says Sabrina RomanoffNew York-based psychologist and relationship expert at dating app Hily.
Some people have decades-long great family traditions that they want to continue. Others prefer to keep it low key. Whatever the activities are and whatever the meaning behind them, opening up about the things that are important to you can feel very vulnerable.
Ultimately, the goal is to blend “each other’s cultures and worlds,” says Romanoff. Here’s how successful couples get through this festive time of year.
They are ‘direct and honest’ about what they want
First of all, every partner should know what they want and be clear about it.
Do they want their spouses to join them for their family Christmas? Do they want to take a break and have a quiet Hanukkah? “It’s better to be direct and honest with your partner so you both get what you really need,” says Romanoff.
Ultimately there will need to be some flexibility on both sides.
“I think the healthiest couples are those who can be creative and compromise,” she says. “There is only one Christmas Eve, there is only one Christmas Day.”
Maybe this year the couple spends time with one party’s family, and next year they spend time with the other party’s family.
Together they create new traditions
Second, Successful couples create new traditions together.
“This might mean going to see the tree at Rockefeller Center together or buying an ornament together,” says Romanoff. This might mean cooking a holiday meal or making a hot chocolate treat.
Building something new together is a bonding experience. “I think that’s what brings security to the relationship,” he says.
