A young woman died as a result of voluntary euthanasia after dealing with depression for years.
On Thursday, March 26, 25-year-old Noelia Castillo Ramos from Barcelona, Spain, ended her life by voluntary euthanasia after a year-long struggle to have the approval of a controversial case that attracted international attention. He died alone, as desired, explaining that his family did not understand his decision.
In an interview a few days before his death, Ramos said he had no doubts about ending his own life and that he wanted to “leave in peace” after years of pain.
“I was very open about it from the beginning,” he said antenna 3.
“None of my family supports euthanasia. Frankly, because I’m another pillar of the family. I leave and you stay here with all the pain,” Ramos explained. “But I think, all the pain I’ve suffered over the years… I just want to leave in peace and end the pain. And the happiness of a father, a mother, or a sister doesn’t have to come before the happiness of a daughter or the sadness in a daughter’s life.”

Over the years, Ramos suffered from depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and borderline personality disorder. This led to him staying in a state-supervised facility for vulnerable youth.

Spain passed a law in March 2021 legalizing both voluntary euthanasia and assisted dying. The law, which applies only to residents of the country, allows adults with “serious and incurable” illnesses that cause “unbearable suffering” to choose to end their lives. They must be able to give informed consent.
Voluntary euthanasia involves the administration of a lethal injection by a doctor. Assisted dying means that a terminally ill person receives lethal medications from a medical doctor who administers them on their own.

Ramos was scheduled to end his life in August 2024, but the process was halted following a legal challenge from his father, with support from the conservative advocacy group Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers).
The father argued that mental health issues impede his ability to make informed decisions, noting “the state’s obligation to protect the lives of those who are particularly vulnerable, such as a teenager with mental health issues.”
However, multiple lower courts reportedly supported Ramos’ case. He testified in court in March 2025, begging the judge to let him die voluntarily.

In February 2026, the Constitutional Court of Spain, the country’s highest court, rejected the father’s appeal on the grounds that “fundamental rights were not violated” and Ramos was allowed to end his life.
