3 dead, 6 hurt after car hits bicyclist and crashes into Los Angeles grocery store

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Three people were killed and six others were injured when a car collided with a bicyclist and then crashed into a grocery store in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash was reported shortly after noon at 99 Ranch Market in the city’s Westwood neighborhood, according to Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

Three victims, some of whom were trapped under the vehicle, died at the scene, Lantz said.

An incident report from the fire department later stated that four people were taken to hospitals, two with serious injuries and two with minor injuries. Two others refused transportation despite medical advice.

Police Lt. Anthony Espinoza said the driver of a Toyota Prius lost control after hitting the bicyclist and then swerved off the road toward the bakery section of the market.

Officials at the scene said the driver was a woman and was cooperating with investigators and undergoing a medical evaluation. The condition of the cyclist is not yet known.

TV news footage showed a silver sedan with its trunk fully open inside the store on Westwood Boulevard.

A triage area was set up outside the store to treat patients and there was a major police and fire department response.

The accident occurred near the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles. Espinoza said none of those killed or injured were college students.
