32 Cases Booked Against People Who Defamed Woman in MLA Mamkoottathil Rape Case

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 32 cases have been registered across Kerala against people who allegedly defamed the woman whose complaint led to the arrest of Congress MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil for sexual assault, police said on Thursday.
According to the police, the Cyber Operations Wing monitors online platforms where content that insults or targets the complainant is circulated. Police said that they started filing a lawsuit on Monday against people who were found to have shared the woman’s photo.
An official from the Cyber Operations Wing said that many people who had previously shared the complainant’s photo later deleted it. The officer added that Wing also monitors those who share content that reveals the woman’s identity.
Currently, bailable offenses are being invoked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The majority of these cases were registered at cyber police stations in each district.
Police said notices have been issued to the accused and arrests will be recorded based on evidence uncovered during the investigation. Following the woman’s complaint, the police first filed a case against activist Rahul Easwar and four other people. Easwar was arrested and a court in Thiruvananthapuram later rejected his bail plea.
