5 killed in US military strike of reported trafficking boats on New Year’s Eve

Five people were killed in a Dec. 31 kinetic attack by the U.S. military on two ships operated by terrorist organizations smuggling narcotics, U.S. Southern Command said Wednesday.

Officials said intelligence confirmed that the ships were transiting known narcotics smuggling routes and were engaged in drug smuggling activities during the operation.

Authorities said that a total of five people identified as narco-terrorists were killed during the actions, three people were killed on the first ship and two people were killed on the second ship.

The War Department described the operation as part of Operation Southern Lance.

The video published regarding the operation shows an attack on a ship at sea. Military officials did not clarify whether there were other clashes other than those shown in the unclassified video.

Another strike was announced earlier in the day, but it is unclear at this time whether the two are linked.
