Man walks away from wreckage of car which split in half and burst into flames on Hume Highway

A man miraculously walked away from the wreckage of a vehicle that was split in half, burst into flames, damaged another vehicle and brought down power lines on a major artery in Sydney’s west.

The Hume Highway remained completely closed in Villawood, near Farrell Road, after a sedan crashed into a lamppost and split in half at around 9.30pm on Sunday.

Police said emergency services found the vehicle had split in half and caught fire before the rear of the sedan crashed into a hatchback being driven westbound by a 48-year-old man.

The rest of the vehicle was found 200 meters from the crash site at the pole.

“The 24-year-old driver escaped the wreckage and was assisted at the scene by passers-by until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived and took him to Royal North Shore hospital,” NSW Police said.

“The second driver was taken to Liverpool Hospital for assessment.”

According to police, the force of the impact “split the pole in half”, knocking down a number of power lines and shutting down the entire highway for four hours.

The highway is expected to be fully open by 7 a.m. on Monday.

An investigation into the accident has been launched by Bankstown Police Area Command.

Police are urging anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the incident to contact Bankstown Police or Crime Stoppers.
