The bus was taking 19 students to Barton Peveril Sixth Form College when he left Bishopstoke Road, and on Thursday at 10:00 am, the river ended in Itchen.
A witness said the driver had mechanical failure and the brakes stopped working.

“We couldn’t stop and we had to knit from traffic trying not to hit any car, and then the bus driver lost control – we flew to the river.

“Everything was a little manic. Nobody really knew what was going on.
In a video of the incident, a student can be heard on the bus: “Oh my God, we will die, we will actually die,” he screams and images end.
Kelly West, who lives nearby and running to the scene, said the driver’s brakes failed and the accelerator was stuck.
“I heard some noise, I looked out the window and came to look at the river,” he said.
Mrs. West said people were screaming and the driver fell into the trap.

He said: “I told him to stop panic, and he said that the brakes were unsuccessful and that the accelerator was stuck and tried to avoid cars.”

A student’s mother said that he panicked to hear the accident, but praised the driver’s actions.

“My son showed me a video shot by a student when he couldn’t stop the bus. They were very scared, the poor ones.
“I think the bus driver did his best and he pulled it to the river instead of going into a more populated area.”
Another mother said she heard the news that she felt tense and panicked.
Im I ran here as quickly as I could, but I couldn’t reach my daughter.
