Russia asks UN aviation agency ICAO to ease sanctions over safety concerns

(Reuters) -Russia calls the UN Civil Aviation Agency to alleviate spare parts and excessive flights and to reject the response to the war in Ukraine as “illegal coercive measures”.

Since Russia’s occupation of Ukraine in February 2022, Western sanctions have reduced access to foreign aircraft and spare parts, and has divided Russian airlines into more than 700 Airbus and Boeing jets on complex, indirect import roads.

In a statement given by a source of Russia to Reuters, Russian officials are now trying to negotiate the survival of sanctions, especially in spare parts they say, especially for flight safety.

A challenge for the Russian ICAO Assembly is stimulating

Russia’s efforts create a challenge for a meeting of the International Civil Aviation Organization, which sets global safety standards for civil aviation and condemns Moscow for violating Ukraine’s dominance and bilateral aircraft registration.

Russia, Minsk’s support to Moscow in the Ukrainian invasion of the US last week after the removal of Sanctions to Belarus state carrier Belarus’ya ICAO made a request to ICAO.

In the work documents presented before the ICAO’s three parliamentary councils, Moscow said that the sanctions were contrary to global rules. Russia is also trying to choose to ICAO’s 36 State Management Councils after not gaining enough votes in 2022 after the occupation of Ukraine.

Russia, which is the largest country in the world, is largely dependent on commercial aircraft for domestic cargo and passenger transport in 11 time zones, but the latest events show that Russia’s fleet is humiliating.

In late July, a Soviet Period Antonov An-24, built in 1976, fell to the far east of Russia and killed all 48 people. Days later, the Russian flag carrier Aeroflot, after a crippled cyber attack, dozens of flights.

“Illegal coercive measures violates the right to freedom of movement, regardless of national and citizenship.” He said.

“ICAO needs to take all practical measures to prevent states from applying politically prejudicing and compelling measures in the field of international civil aviation.”

Russia has an aging aircraft fleet

The documents are also criticized for the closure of the airspace for the flight operations of Russian airlines of 37 states, suspended flights to flight for airplanes operated by Russian airlines, and aircraft care and insurance.

Russian aviation observer Rosaviatsiya did not respond to a Reuters’ request, and the Ministry of Transport refused to comment. Ukrainian officials were not ready to comment immediately.

Russia’s Boeing and the Airbus aircraft fleet age, and all parts cannot be imported with so -called “gray” schemes, in a statement to the Russian aviation source Reuters, a significant portion of Western planes can be grounded.

“If a Russian Boeing or Airbus collapses in the near future and people die – what? What? In any case will be responsible for sanctions.” He said.
