‘Bad faith’ public servants chased for state legal fees

Three public officials who cannot act in good faith while giving evidence of the sexual abuse investigation will have to pay more than $ 76,000 for legal fees financed by the state.

In 2022, a 27 Tasmanian public officials who emerged before the investigation was initiated an independent investigation of $ 1 million legal aid.

The government offered a $ 56,430 legal aid given to Peter Renshaw, the former Launceston General Hospital, who resigned after the investigation.

Dr Renshaw found that the investigation did not comply with the protocols to report the sexual abuse of suspicious child.

The investigation misleaded the president of the health department about the former Launceston General Hospital Nurse James Geoffrey Griffin.

The investigation felt sad evidence of Griffin’s abuse of the abuse of Griffin, who took his life in 2019 after the child was accused of sexual crimes.

Dr Renshaw also found evidence by the investigation “deficiencies and fabrication”.

The independent investigation suggested that Dr Renshaw shows “lack of goodwill” and the state to repay for legal wages.

The investigation found that the state was the reasons for receiving the legal aid of $ 19,745, a former Ashley Youth Detention Center and the former hospital consultant.

They found that they did not act in good faith while giving evidence.

Chief Public Prosecutor Guy Barnett said he instructed the Ministry of Justice to save public funds from Dr Renshaw and two other state officials.

The investigation is still questioning the legal aid given to nine of 27 public officials.

The investigation, which made its final report in 2023, made 191 advice, including the closure of the Ashley Youth Detention Center.

While a spare was being built, the center, which remained open, said that a lively child has increased sexual abuse.

In 2024, a court gave compensation of $ 75 million for 129 former prisoners claiming that they had been subjected to sexual or physical abuse or witnessed in the center between 1960 and 2023.
