Inside the world’s tallest abandoned hotel that cost a whopping £559m to build | World | News

Ryugyong Hotel, which rises 1,080 feet to the silhouette of Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea, stands as one of the most striking and mysterious buildings in the world. But it’s not famous for its luxury, but the gap is now remarkable.
According to the Japanese media, although it was a price tag of £ 559 million, the hotel has never hosted a single guest. Ryugyong, which is often called “apocalypse hotel”, is designed as a bold symbol of North Korea’s economic and architectural skills. The construction, which was shaped like a 105 -storey glass -coated pyramid, started in 1987 with the aim of completing the project for the 80th birthday of President Kim Il Sung in 1992. If it was opened in the program, it would have demanded the title of the highest hotel in the world.
The hotel has been designed to have more than 3,000 rooms and five luxury restaurants offering a 360 -degree view of the capital.
However, the dream was soon disintegrated. In 1992, the construction suddenly stopped after the collapse of the Soviet Union, a key economic ally of North Korea, as the building reached its full height.
With the loss of foreign investment, the construction was stopped and the Ryugyong skeleton was left on the stalls on the windowless and lifeless capital.
In 2008, the work continued after an agreement with the Orascom Group of Egypt, a telecom company that has established a partnership with the regime to open mobile phone networks.
The outer part was completed until 2011, stylish glass panels were installed and a modern antenna was installed on the structure.
In 2012, he reappeared for an official launch, and even a partial opening was announced jointly with the German luxury hotel chain Kempinski, but the agreement was closed until 2013.
In 2018, a giant LED display was mounted on a face of the building and turned the still tower into a shining propaganda canvas.
Today, Ryugyong is burning with nationalist animations, political slogans and fireworks.
In 2024, North Korea reportedly started to look for a foreign investor to complete the hotel for special rights in a large 105 -storey building.
Ryugyong Hotel, whether or not this latest casino offer, continues to be a rising symbol of the ambition that is still waiting to be fulfilled.
