Nurses gain prescribing powers: What it means for patients and GPs
Tens of thousands of registered nurses in Australia can now start training to prescribe drugs after a historical change in the country’s health system.
The movement has been greeting as one of the most important changes in Australian health services for decades, facilitating the pressure on extreme GPs and improving access to drugs for patients in rural and distant communities.
So far, only medical doctors, dentists, some pharmacists, nurses practitioners and approved midwives may legally prescribe medication.
Claiming waiting times and rural access
Australia’s primary health system is under pressure, many patients are waiting for a long time to see GP.
Australian Nursing College Nursing Officer Frances Rice, reform, “a GP can release time at workload,” he said.

Professor Mills said, “Registered nurses will mean prescribing, faster, local access to treatment, and no longer unnecessary delays or long journeys,” he said.
“In rural and remote regions, nurses are usually the first contact point for health services, prescription writing authority means faster access and maintenance continuity to basic drugs.
“This change has the potential to reduce hospital assumptions, reduce costs and release doctors for complex cases.”
How will the prescription work
It operates within the scope of a prescription agreement with an authorized clinician who summarizes which drugs they can prescribe and when they can prescribe the prescriptions of the registered nurse.

Senior lecturer and practical nurse Corinne Dunningham said that the registered nurses were “7/24 patients with patients”.
“They know their patients well and defend for care when obstacles or delays occur,” Dunningham said.
“This has been developed to respond to the obstacles in the prescription way, application and maintenance delays to the registered nurse, so that it is a natural progress of the registered nurse advocacy and timely access.”
New Way for Nurses
Registered nurses who wish to prescribe should fill a structured path to obtain the necessary approvals.
An existing registration should be made, after the first registration, at least three years of full -time clinical experience, and the Australian and Midwifery Board (NMBA) approved graduate competence or equivalent units that prepare them to prescribe planned drugs.
After completing their studies, nurses should perform a six -month clinical mentor under an authorized health practitioner before becoming a registered nurse prescription writings.
After approved, they can prescribe, manage, have, possess and supply drugs, from pharmacy drugs and pharmacist drugs to only prescription drugs and in some cases to strict controlled drugs such as morphine and phenillas.
Professor Gerdtz said that in the communities where registered nurses to prescribe drugs, especially in the communities where a doctor is difficult to see a doctor, it will improve access to maintenance and safer, more effective drug use ”.

Balancing of security and access
Some medical experts have increased concerns about Table 8 -controlled drugs, such as morphine and fentanyl.
Royal Australian GPS College President Michael Wright warned that the expanding nurse prescription can “reduce coordinated and comprehensive care opportunities”.
“Nurses and nurse practitioners should work and work at the top of the scope as a part of a multi -disciplined team containing GP,“ he said.
“Good primary health services are coordinated, collaborative and continuous. If it is not properly coordinated under GP control, the expansion of the application scope may lead to confusion, insecure recipe or treatment and reproduction of services.”
National Standards
The NMBA issued a standard of registration for registered nurse recipes determined together with supportive instructions. These documents explain the qualifications, responsibilities and application scope, application process and clinical mentors that they need to complete the qualifications, responsibilities and implementation of nurses.
NMBA President Veronica Casey called it one of the biggest changes in nursing regulation for decades ”.

The presentation is guided by an application surveillance group that is co -chaired by NSW and South Australia’s chief nursing and midwifery officers who control clinical management, manage risks and provide consistent practices national.
Accreditation and Education
In January 2025, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council issued prescription accreditation standards with NMBA approved nurse and provided a consistent frame for training programs.
Anmac General Manager Tanya Vogt said that the new accreditation standards for the prescribed RN prescription represented a large milestone for nursing in Australia.
Vogt equipped with knowledge and skills to safely prescribe registered nurses and support additional access to high quality care for people and communities in Australia, ”Vogt said.
The four educational providers opened the way for hundreds of students to start at the beginning of 2026 and presented programs for evaluation. The first graduates are expected until the middle of 2026.
Forward view
Presentation is gradual, the first prescription nurses in 2026 are expected. Training providers, health institutions and regulators will closely monitor the program.
