‘I didn’t see women like me on screen, that rejection..’

Bhumi Pednekar showed how his film journey directed his advocacy for representation, body positivity and climate action at Milken Asian Summit.
In the 12th edition of the Asian Summit of Milken Institute – the world’s leading leaders, government, finance, health, philanthropy and technology, ‘progress for the purpose: cooperation there’ came together to discuss. Among the heads of state, CEOs and policy experts, Bhumi Satish Pednekar, the Indian actor and climate defendant who came to the fore with the story of deep personal flexibility, representation and responsibility.
For Bhumi Pednekar, this global scene began not in the meeting rooms, but in the heart of Indian cinema. He said to the audience who shared his shaping years and the things that shaped his advocacy: ‘I always knew I wanted to be an actor, but I didn’t see women like me on the screen. I didn’t feel represented, and I laughed when I told people about my dream. This rejection just fueled me more – I thought, I will show you. My first film was Dum Laga Ke Haisha, a beautiful story about a woman who did not fit the narrow beauty of society. It was always done to feel ‘less’, but in the end he gets rid of these shackles and claims his value. This role changed my life – not just because I finally lived my dream, but because it shows me the real power of cinema. Even in India, there are too many stamping and taboo. But cinema opens hearts. Creates empathy. And when empathy takes action, this advocacy. That’s when I noticed the type of work I wanted to do, and why did I dare to say no to the roles that didn’t follow this journey. ‘
His explanations were a powerful reminder of the loyalty between culture and change. Using the starlines to challenge settled stereotypes, Bhumi, not only for the representation of authentic female representation on the screen, but also formed the basis of its advocacy from the championship to climate justice.
Some of the most urgent problems of humanity – up to capital and demographic change and public health – the voice of Pednekar, especially at the Asian Summit, where he can emphasize the unique role that he can emphasize the unique role from Global South. When matched with conviction, he showed how cultural influence could change the narratives and activate the action.
