Two million pensioners could have to repay up to £300 to HMRC – will it be taken from bank accounts?

Due to changes in winter fuel payment, approximately two million retirees may need to pay back to 300 £ in tax.
As of November, the payment is expected to continue to go to the ages of 66 years and older to help heating costs, but there will be a new income limit that sees that more than £ more than 35,000 £ a year cannot be entitled.
The new rules of conformity for the payment of winter fuel will see that the Labor Party’s decision to restrict payment with everyone, except for the poorest retirees, will see that approximately 7.4 million retirees are suitable for payment.
This winter will automatically pay £ 200 or £ 300 per household.
However, instead of keeping the payment in advance or taking it back directly from retired bank accounts, the government is preparing to pay winter fuel payment to everyone and to save the money on the threshold through the tax system.
This means that no pensioners need to take any action to receive the payment.
Will the money be taken from bank accounts?
BBC Radio 4 Money Box’s financial journalist Dan Whitt said, “This money will not be taken from the bank accounts. Instead, HMRC will take it back by tax.”
The method of reclaiming the payment will be by paying the payment of the customer’s salary or retirement income by a change in the tax codes of the amount (Paye). The payment shall be paid in monthly installments for 2026 and 2027 tax years as of April 2026.
If the existing self -assessment provides tax returns for customers, the amount will be added to the tax invoice next year. HMRC will automatically include the payment in 2025-2026 tax returns by 31 January 2027.
They should check that winter payments are online refunds and include them. Paper self-evaluation tax return will be included in the 2025-2026 tax returns by 31 October 2026.
HMRC spokesman said: “The majority of people who need to pay back a winter fuel payment will automatically do this through tax codes.
“We have provided online guidance to the recovery of payments and explaining a calculator in order to see whether or not they need to pay the payment.”
Mr. Whitworth said that the process would change again from 2027 because HMRC was planning to receive two payment that year.
In BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio 4 announced, “More than 2026 and the other is left behind 2027.”
“The government says that this approach helps to prevent delays in compensating over payments and makes the system up to date.”
Those who believe that they will violate the income threshold of £ 35,000 may prefer to receive 2026 winter fuel payment with instructions in Gov.uk or Mygov.scot as of April 1, 2026. It is possible to do this by phone or by mail.
