Pam Bondi to testify before Senate amid Trump’s troop deployments | Pam Bondi

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi will face senators on Tuesday as Donald Trump steps up his crackdown on political opponents, Democratic-run cities and alleged drug traffickers.

Bondi’s appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee will give lawmakers from both parties an opportunity to question the president about his high-profile interventions in the justice system, including last month’s indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.

“No one is above the law,” Bondi wrote on social media after the charges against Comey were announced, an echo of rhetoric used by Democrats after Trump was impeached during Joe Biden’s presidency.

Charges were filed against Comey only after the top federal prosecutor was fired for not moving forward with the case. “Today’s indictment reflects this Justice Department’s commitment to prosecuting those who exploit their positions of responsibility by misleading the American people. We will pursue the facts in this case.”

The attorney general is also likely to be questioned about the Trump administration’s deadly attacks on boats believed to be carrying drugs off the coast of Venezuela and a brewing debate over the release of documents related to alleged sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

Bondi’s appearance comes as Trump orders National Guard troops to Chicago over the objections of city leaders and is sending the California National Guard to Portland after a federal judge blocked Oregon from sending its forces.

While the state of Illinois is suing over the Chicago deployment, California Governor Gavin Newson said his state will ask a judge to stop sending its troops to Portland.

In addition to his pre-Senate appearance, Bondi was expected to testify to lawmakers in the House of Representatives this week, but speaker Mike Johnson kept that chamber away from the session to pressure Senate Democrats to accept a Republican proposal to fund the government.
