Trinamool takes fight to Tripura: Delegation visits Agartala party office ‘vandalised by BJP’

A five-member Trinamool Congress delegation from Kolkata, including two MPs and a West Bengal minister, visited Tripura on Wednesday, October 9, 2025, after the party office in Dhaleshwar, Agartala, was vandalized the previous night, allegedly by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers.

maa, mati, manush Tripura showed us so much love and respect… They are happy to have us back. Tripura Trinamool Congress is here to stay. “If we were so insignificant and the BJP government in Tripura had no problem with us, then why should our party office here be vandalized?” Trinamool MP Saayoni Ghosh said at a press conference at the vandalized party office today.

The delegation, comprising Ms Ghosh, Lok Sabha MP Pratima Mondal, MLA and West Bengal Minister Birbaha Hansda and spokespersons Kunal Ghosh and Sudip Raha, visited the Tripura Pradesh Trinamool Congress office in Agartala on Wednesday, hours after it was vandalized the previous night. The party claimed that the attack was carried out by BJP workers and accused the State police of inaction despite being present.

Notably, the attack followed the grievous physical attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh at Nagrakata in West Bengal’s flood-affected Jalpaiguri district on Monday and the attack on BJP MLA Manoj Kumar Oraon in Kumargram on Tuesday (October 8, 2025). In both cases, he blamed the saffron party Trinamool.

Trinamool delegation stranded at Agartala airport

However, the Trinamool delegation’s visit to the Agartala office, scheduled for around 12:30 pm immediately after their arrival at the Agartala airport, was postponed by a few hours following the drama surrounding the delegation’s exit from the airport.

Party spokesman Kunal Ghosh said, “Today, after we landed, we learned that the drivers who came to pick us up were threatened and sent away from the airport. They did not even allow us to take a prepaid taxi from the airport. When we decided to walk out of the airport, the police stopped us. We told the police that if they did not arrange an emergency vehicle for us, we would walk to our office.”

The delegation, which was also attended by Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, even organized a short sit-in demonstration at the airport.

“When BJP leaders from Tripura visit West Bengal, they roam freely and participate in all kinds of activities, from political rallies to weddings. But when we visit Tripura, which is under BJP rule, we see hotels vandalized, hotel owners threatened, our employees attacked, their vehicles vandalized,” said Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh.

After the airport incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised questions about Tripura’s ‘twin-engine BJP government’ and cited past examples of attacks on Trinamool leaders and their convoys in Tripura, including that of Abhishek Banerjee and MP Sushmita Dev.

“We sent only a five-member delegation comprising a minister, MPs and MLAs. [the Tripura government] He stopped them at the airport. Even paid taxis were not allowed. They waited for a long time… Then I told them to start walking. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee said after the airport incident came to light: If they had stopped them from doing so, I would have gone there myself to see how daring they were.

Later in the day, the delegation met with the Director General of Police of Tripura to discuss the attack on the party office and the delegation’s experience at the airport; They claimed both took place in the presence of police. The delegation is expected to meet with the Governor of Tripura tomorrow.

It is worth noting that the Trinamool Congress is contesting elections in Tripura, including the Assembly polls in 2018 and 2023. It had won a seat in the local elections in Tripura in 2021.

BJP reacted to the allegations

The saffron party on Wednesday accused Trinamool of trying to distract the public with its Tripura visit.

“It seems very strange that Trinamool is alleging that the BJP government is vandalizing the party office. Why would the BJP want to do this when there is no Trinamool presence in Tripura?… On the one hand, Mamata Banerjee’s men will attack BJP workers for fourteen years, mutilate an MP’s face to the point of bleeding. He should not think that these will not have an impact on people in Delhi, Tripura or elsewhere,” he said. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul Hindu.
