Documentary explores her fashion career, relationship, but not Spice Girls era
Victoria Beckham ★★★
“Be honest!” The moment in David Beckham’s 2023 Netflix documentary – when David countered his wife Victoria Beckham’s claim that she was working class, while her father was actually driving her to school in a Rolls-Royce – a documentary about Victoria was eagerly awaited.
Victoria Beckham now gets the chance to tell her story in her own Netflix documentary.
After all, she’s a former Spice Girl, Posh by Becks, a football WAG and a perennial tabloid favorite who has somehow managed to stay in the spotlight ever since she took to the stage and sang in a tiny Gucci dress. wannabe.
Will we finally get to see the real Victoria Beckham – smiling, witty and self-deprecating, glimpsed as she passes through 30-plus years in the celebrity game?
The answer is sort of, sort of maybe.
What we get is a controlled portrait of a very determined woman who has worked hard to prove herself. And although she constantly tells her husband that he does not need it. David adores Victoria – this is clear in both documentaries – but Victoria still doesn’t seem to adore herself. The ghosts of her past continue to haunt her today, being told she wasn’t “aesthetically pleasing” enough to be at the front of the stage in drama school performances, being told she was either Skinny Spice or Chubby Spice.
Victoria and David Beckham are still a lovely couple, but we don’t see enough of that in the Victoria Beckham documentary.
Directed by Nadia Hallgren, director of the 2020 Michelle Obama documentary To beProduced by David’s company, Studio 99, the three-part documentary centers around Victoria’s eponymous fashion brand as Paris Fashion Week approaches. The show will be the brand’s biggest yet and a statement about the brand’s creative and financial health after several challenging years.
That’s why the documentary is full of big names in the fashion world. Vogue Anna Wintour, designers Tom Ford, Donatella Versace and Roland Mouret and supermodel Gigi Hadid. Also featured, of course, are David, his close friend Eva Longoria (the most energetic of those who spoke), his parents (briefly), and his business partner David Belhassen.
