National Guard troops now guard federal property in Chicago area, official says
Hello, welcome to the live blog of US politics. I’m Tom Ambrose and I’ll be bringing you the latest news over the next few hours.
We start with this news A small number of National Guard troops began guarding federal property in the Chicago area and assisting law enforcement in Memphis on Wednesday, according to officials..
An “element” of 200 Texas Guard soldiers was operating in the Chicago area, according to a U.S. Northern Command spokesman who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational details that have not been publicly released.
Northern Command said in a statement online that the troops were in the city to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) buildings and other federal facilities and law enforcement personnel.
The troops, along with about 300 soldiers from Illinois, had arrived at the U.S. Army Reserve Center in Elwood, 55 miles southwest of Chicago, on Tuesday. All 500 troops are under Northern Command and have been active for 60 days. The spokesman could not immediately provide details on how the troops were armed.
Donald Trump on Wednesday called for the imprisonment of Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) officers.
“The Mayor of Chicago should go to jail for failing to protect the Icemen!” Trump wrote Real Social Wednesday morning. “Governor Pritzker too!”
Both Johnson and Pritzker are Democrats. Trump’s remarks came as national guard troops began arriving in the Chicago area at the orders of the Trump administration, despite objections from Illinois officials including Pritzker and Johnson.
