NNPS to enforce cell phone ban from start to end of school day

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Newport News Public Schools announced a strict no cell phone policy effective November 5th.

While the previous policy allowed students to use phones during lunch, the new policy eliminates that use.

To comply with state law, students will not be allowed to use cell phones from the beginning of the school day until the end of the day, including during lunch and transition periods between classes.

Elementary students who use cell phones are told to keep them out of sight during regular school hours and after-school activities. Middle school and high school students are allowed to use cell phones after dismissal.

The policy will be implemented at all schools in the district.

NNPS said the goal is to reduce distractions, improve academic focus, encourage positive social interaction and create a safer school environment.

Repeat violations may result in level 2 disciplinary action, which includes short-term suspension, warning or contacting the student’s parents, school officials said.
