The Wayne Rooney Show: ‘We tried’ – Rooney defends his England team

He continued: “What you have now is [rival teams’] player training [together] before returning to pre-season together – Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford, for example.
“It’s a different generation. The important thing is that it is covered much better in the media. The players get along better with the media. From the outside, it gives a better feeling.”
Speaking as a guest on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, Gerrard said many former Manchester United and Liverpool players now get on better as pundits than they do with their England team-mates.
“I didn’t feel like part of a team. I didn’t feel like I had a connection with my team-mates and with England,” he said.
In response, Rooney said: “This [was] It’s difficult to have that kind of relationship with Liverpool and Man Utd players. It’s easier now.
“I talk to Steven all the time 1760074623. Now you can build better relationships because you can drink beer together and relax more.
“I was on good terms with everyone, I got along with everyone. I was aware of Becks [David Beckham] and Gary Neville and Scholesy [Paul Scholes]You could see they couldn’t get close to the Liverpool players.
“But one thing is for sure, everyone worked hard for each other. I don’t think it’s a problem. We just didn’t manage to get over the line. I’ve never seen that.”
Like Gerrard, Rooney played in six major tournaments for England but only reached the quarter-finals.
But he said the players always “100%” “believed we could definitely win”.
