The Nobel Committee awarded this year’s peace prize to María Corina Machado amid calls from President Donald Trump for her to receive the prize after she brokered a historic agreement between Israel and Hamas.
A number of high-profile candidates have been nominated since Trump returned to office. But the committee’s nomination deadline was Jan. 31, meaning he could be eligible for next year’s award.

At the Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Trump was asked about the Nobel Peace Prize, but did not comment on the award in his response. Instead he focused on the possibility of addressing Israel’s Knesset.
Earlier this week, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, a group representing families of hostages and victims of terrorism founded after October 7, appealed to the committee on Trump’s behalf.
“Over the past year, no leader or organization has contributed more to peace around the world than President Trump. While many others spoke eloquently about peace, he delivered. While others made empty promises, he delivered tangible results that saved countless lives,” the forum’s Oct. 6 letter to the committee said.
“He didn’t just talk about peace, he made it happen,” the forum added.

TRUMP HAS BEEN HALUTED AS A NOBEL PRIZE WORTHY PEACEMAKER FOR HIS ‘HISTORIC’ ISRAEL-HAMAS PEACE AGREEMENT
During his visit to Washington DC in July, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Trump that he was nominating the president for the Nobel Peace Prize. While conveying the news, Netanyahu gave Trump the letter he sent to the committee.
Netanyahu said, “The President has already realized the great opportunities. He prepared the Abraham Accords. As we speak, he is establishing peace in one country and one region after another.” he said. “Therefore, Mr. President, I would like to present to you the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize committee. This letter nominates you for the peace prize, which is richly deserved.”
Weeks before this meeting, the United States and Israel carried out major operations that destroyed Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, and both countries warned that a nuclear Tehran would be a threat to the world.

Trump had been nominated for this award in the past but was not selected. Notably, U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-Y., had nominated Trump for the award in 2020 for brokering the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and Arab nations.
If he had won, Trump would have become the fifth US president to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Previous honorees include former President Barack Obama, former President Jimmy Carter, former President Woodrow Wilson and former President Theodore Roosevelt.
