Man dies at Merri train station, in Northcote, after being handcuffed by PSOs
A man died while being handcuffed by protective services officers after acting hesitantly when asking for help at Northcote railway station.
The passenger requested assistance from PSOs while on the train Friday night and exited the train with officers at Merri station.
Police said the man lost consciousness and died at the Merri station on Friday night.
A police spokesman said the man appeared “drugged” and was acting erratically on the station platform.
“Protective service officers requested an ambulance and handcuffed the man due to his increasingly erratic behavior,” he said.
The 63-year-old man became unresponsive around 9.45pm and officers performed CPR, but he could not be revived.
Homicide detectives will investigate the man’s death under the supervision of Victoria Police Professional Standards Command, which is standard practice when a person dies in police custody.
