Trucking company files Chapter 7 bankruptcy, shuts down abruptly

When a trucking company closes down, there is often a downtime to deliver the remaining loads. Not doing so leaves thousands of people in limbo because they don’t know if their orders will arrive.

The problem can be worse when delivered items have an expiration date or may otherwise become less valuable or even worthless.

In some cases, items in the middle of transport become an even bigger hassle because customers have to pay for delivery, but whoever owns the assets of the bankrupt shipping company has no obligation to deliver.

A similar problem arose with the collapse of furniture company Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams in 2023. Customers had paid for delivery, but this payment had not been sent to shipping partners.

Ultimately, the bankruptcy court allowed Ryder Last Mile and other shipping companies to recharge customers if they wanted their goods.

In the case of Montgomery Transportation, which filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection on Oct. 9 and was promptly shut down, the fate of its in-depot and transit deliveries remains unclear.

Birmingham, Alabama-based flatbed trucking company Montgomery Transport LLC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and immediately ceased operations. This leaves approximately 1,000 employees unemployed and the fate of everything the company sends uncertain.

The company disclosed its business on its website.

“Montgomery Transport is a leading flatbed carrier in the country, specializing in the safe transportation of multidimensional loads. Our company was built on understanding the unique needs of our customers and drivers. That means state-of-the-art safety technology, well-maintained equipment, high quality standards and strong relationships,” the company shared.

Then comes an explanation that now seems hollow, given the Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing and abandonment of remaining burdens:

We treat every move like it’s the most important thing on the road; because it is so for us.
