Jacob Rees-Mogg demolishes Keir Starmer’s attempt to blame Brexit | Politics | News

Senior Tory and Brexiteer Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has criticized Sir Keir Starmer’s attempts to blame Brexit for Britain’s problems. Sir Jacob said Sir Keir was “at it again” as the Prime Minister tried to divert attention from Labour’s own mistakes. The former Conservative Cabinet minister spoke as Labor launched a new campaign designed to convince British voters that Brexit is to blame for Britain’s economic problems.

Sir Jacob said: “Labour’s analysis is a malicious and discourteous failure to accept that it lost the referendum. More importantly, it is untrue. There is no evidence that leaving was economically detrimental.” He said that because of Brexit, the Treasury was getting revenue that it “could not have gotten otherwise”.

Writing in the Telegraph, Sir Jacob highlighted Labour’s effort to blame Nigel Farage for Brexit and the damage it is supposedly doing to the economy. He wrote: “After failing to successfully blame the Conservative Party for its own failures, the party is still at it again. This time it appears to be laying the blame on Nigel Farage because, according to the Government, Brexit is the cause of all the financial problems.”

“This ignores the choices made last year to undermine businesses with National Insurance and minimum wage increases. Instead, it faults a decision the British people made in 2016.

“To blame Nigel Farage is to effectively attack the greatest democratic decision ever made by British voters. Too afraid to accuse voters of wrongdoing, Labor is attacking one of the main heroes of Brexit by implying that he is deceiving stupid voters into doing something that is not in their interest.”

It comes after reports that Sir Keir will blame Nigel Farage and Brexit for the expected decline in the UK’s Budget efficiency. Treasury watchdog the Office for Budget Responsibility is expected to confirm the economy is growing slower than expected and the Chancellor will have to plug a £20 billion to £30 billion gap in the public finances, which will require tax rises or spending cuts.

It is stated that Sir Keir and Chancellor Rachel Reeves plan to claim that this downgrade is due to Brexit and that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is responsible for this.
