Urgent ‘do not eat’ recall of Aldi ice cream over undeclared ingredient

Aldi has recalled its ice cream barrels because they did not specify the allergen on the label.

The supermarket is recalling Gianni’s Cheeky Monkey Ice Cream because it contains unlisted wheat.

This means that the product is a possible health risk for anyone with celiac disease or an allergy to gluten.

The Food Standards Agency has told people who have purchased the product and are allergic to wheat or gluten “not to eat” it.

Customers were instead told to “return the item to their nearest Aldi store for a full refund.”

The recall affects 500ml pack sizes with an expiration date of August 14, 2027 and barcode 4088600275871.

In its announcement, Aldi said: “Our supplier is recalling Cheeky Monkey Ice Cream because it contains the allergenic wheat (gluten) which is not stated on the packaging.

“Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store where a full refund will be issued.

“We apologize that this product does not meet our normally high standards and thank you for your cooperation.”

According to Aldi’s website, the chunky chocolate and marshmallow ice cream retails for £1.99.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which gluten attacks the body’s own tissues when eaten, preventing normal digestion and absorption of food and putting you at risk of developing serious health complications.

It is achieved by eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

An estimated 1 in 100 people in the UK have the disease; but only 36 per cent of the condition is diagnosed clinically, according to Celiac UK.
