Water main break snarls traffic on Thomasville Road, lead to boil water notice

Repairs to a water main on Thomasville Road Monday evening blocked access to downtown commuters Tuesday morning.

It also sparked a boil water warning for residents living on parts of the main street.

Traffic was backed up from South Ride to Live Oak Plantation Road, where the water main valve was replaced the morning of Oct. 14.

This disrupted traffic on Thomasville Road and spread to Mahan Drive, causing longer commutes.

A city spokesman said the road work will be completed before the Tuesday afternoon commute.

Residents living on Thomasville Road near Betton Road are also under a boil water advisory, according to a text from the city of Tallahassee.

City officials issued a “boil water advisory” to approximately 200 customers shortly after 11 a.m. on Oct. 14.

According to an email sent to residents without water at a nearby apartment complex, the water main had failed and repairs were underway.

City officials said the repairs were for “water main valve replacement.” The official said water was also returned to residents, although the boil water warning remains in effect.

The city had posted on

The text from the city states that the boil water advisory “will remain in effect until the problem is corrected and a bacteriological investigation indicates the water is safe to drink.” “Once this happens, you will receive a similar notification letting you know the water is safe to drink.”

Everyone in the area was advised to boil “all water used for drinking, making ice, preparing food, brushing teeth and washing dishes.” “One minute of boiling is sufficient. Alternatively, bottled water can be used.”

Since noon, crews were seen working on a large pothole in the roadway in the southbound lane near South Ride.
