This is the age of the average first time buyer in the UK

New data from TSB reveals that the average age of first-time shoppers in the UK fell from 32 to 31 last year.

The bank’s analysis of third quarter figures showed this decrease. The highest average age for new homeowners remained in London at 33, while Wales and Scotland recorded the lowest ages at 30 each.

The bank’s survey research among first-time buyers who have gotten on the property ladder in the last five years also revealed that 17% hope to be mortgage-free before the age of 40.

Censuswide’s survey in October of more than 1,000 first-time homebuyers who had purchased a home in the last five years found the majority (57%) were hoping to shorten their mortgage terms. More than two-fifths (43%) of overpayers do so on a monthly basis.

TSB Mortgage Director Craig Calder said: “Making an overpayment can be a great way to shave years off your mortgage.”
