President Donald Trump has threatened to move the World Cup out of the New England region if Boston’s Democratic mayor, Michelle Wu, doesn’t fight crime.
No threats have yet been made to the New York area, which will host the final on July 19, 2026, and New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, whom Trump once called a “Communist lunatic,” told Martha MacCallum on Wednesday that he would welcome Trump and his football-loving son Barron to MetLife Stadium.
Trump attended the Club World Cup final held at the New Jersey stadium in July.

Last month, Mamdani announced he wanted to appoint a czar for the games in East Rutherford, N.J., and in a conversation with MacCallum, he explained the czar’s role and how it would be a big win not just for tourists but for New York residents as well.
“The World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world, and it’s like no one in New York City government is thinking or talking about it. It’s coming to town next summer, we’ll have billions of people watching,” he said. “The World Cup czar will ensure that this is a tournament that New Yorkers will remember, not just those who visit us. He will ensure that this is a tournament that will mark an increase not just in tourism, but in small business and discovery of this city.”
“We’ve been missing opportunities like this for too long. We recently had New York City’s 400th anniversary; most people have no idea because the city hasn’t done anything about it.”
Last month, Mamdani called “$6,000” tickets “ridiculous,” noting dynamic pricing for the World Cup.

BOSTON’S MAYOR RESPONDED TO TRUMP’S THREATS TO REMOVE WORLD CUP MATCHES OUTSIDE THE CITY DUE TO SECURITY CONCERNS
“What we have seen is that FIFA’s approach to the ticketing process for the World Cup is both unprecedented in the management of previous World Cups and an approach that will make many New Yorkers pay the price for being in the stands,” he said. “Pablo Torre Learns.”
Mamdani recently called for 15 percent of tickets to be reserved at discounted prices for local residents and asked football’s governing body FIFA to reverse its plan to set ticket prices based on demand.

In early September, tickets will start at $60 for group stage matches and go up to $6,730 for the final, officials said. However, in a demand-based pricing model, pricing may fluctuate.
