Pune man calls schools ‘useless’, says homework is too much for kids, internet divided

Increasing pressure on school students is a sensitive and worrying issue.
A man from Pune has expressed his concern over the excessive pressure of homework and projects on school students, especially younger ones. His son’s social media post about him working late into the night on a “silly project” caused a stir online.
A user named Nitin S. Dharmawat described schools as “useless” and said, “It’s 12 o’clock at night. An eighth grader is still doing a stupid project even after completing his homework.”
“The fear is so great that if he doesn’t do this, he won’t be able to attend his favorite physical education class. He stays awake from 12-12:30 every day.”

Increasing pressure on school students is a sensitive and worrying issue. Students are expected to succeed academically, often at the expense of their own well-being. This can negatively affect their mental and physical health, leading to fatigue, stress and depression.
Dharmawat wrote in her post: “As a parent, I feel helpless in the face of this rotten system. What I am against, I now have to face on behalf of my child.” The post sparked controversy online. Some users agree with his views, while others call it “a powerful way to learn.”
“It’s the same story across India. These projects are useless and worthless and serve no purpose in real life. This is a stupid and outdated education system and no one is willing to reform it. They are wasting the time, energy and resources of everyone who cares for students. This is a waste of precious human life,” said a user.
“Project work is a powerful way to learn. Projects are always interdisciplinary. They go beyond the core subject and involve research, understanding, information gathering, sourcing, crafting, art, creativity and finally reporting and presentation. Training children to face competition and join the race has become commonplace. In this way, a lot of talent is wasted and the result is mediocre adults,” said another user.
“This is where our kids learn the false 996 mentality and become ‘yes men’. Stop belittling your teachers and schools with unreasonable demands,” another user wrote.
