Alex Murdaugh’s web of lies led to conviction in murders of wife and son

The rise and fall of disgraced South Carolina jurist Alex Murdaugh continues to fascinate the nation years after he was convicted of double murder in a case that exposed decades of deception, greed and power.
The story of the Murdaugh family collapse is retold in Hulu’s new miniseries “Murdaugh: Death in the Family,” an eight-episode dramatization of one of the most infamous true crime stories in recent history.
On June 7, 2021, Murdaugh called 911 to report finding his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul, shot to death in an apparent homicide at the family’s sprawling Lowcountry estate.

The phone call sparked a shocking chain of events that revealed Murdaugh’s long history of lies and deceit, culminating in him murdering his wife and son.
“I think it’s often difficult for people to separate what we think of and who we think we know,” attorney Mark Tinsley, who testified in the criminal case against Murdaugh, told Fox News Digital. “I think there’s a group of people who still have a hard time believing that the appearance they’re seeing isn’t real.”
Murdaugh came from one of South Carolina’s most prolific legal families, making him a powerful figure who benefited from name recognition in local politics.

But his family was not without controversy.
In 2018, the family’s longtime maid, Gloria Satterfield, mysteriously fell to her death in the Murdaugh home.
Three years later, Paul, then 19, boarded his family’s boat with a group of friends for a night of water. Hours later, the ship crashed into a nearby bridge, throwing 19-year-old Mallory Beach into the dark water.

Beach’s body was found days later, and the family ultimately filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Murdaughs. After intense public pressure, Paul faced state charges in connection with Beach’s death.
Two years later, on the night Maggie and Paul were killed, investigators responded to Murdaugh’s 911 call from the family’s home in Colleton County. The bodies of both mother and son were found near the dog kennels in the backyard of the property and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Although Murdaugh initially told authorities he was not at the kennels that night, a Snapchat video recorded by Paul confirmed that his father was at the scene of the crime during the time frame when investigators believed the couple was murdered.

In September 2021, Murdaugh attempted to stage his own shooting in an attempt to deliver a $10 million life insurance payout to his surviving son, Buster. The plot failed when Curtis Edward Smith grazed Murdaugh’s head with a bullet.
But it was Satterfield’s death that led investigators to discover Murdaugh’s web of lies after it was revealed that Murdaugh had stolen $4.3 million in insurance settlement funds that were supposed to be given to his grieving family.
“I knew he had done some things along the way that weren’t exactly off the charts. [the Satterfield case] “But it turned out it was a lot worse than I thought,” Tinsley said. “At the time of the roadside shooting, I knew the full scope of what was going on and there was a lot there.”

A month later, Murdaugh was arrested on charges stemming from defrauding the Satterfield family while he was at a drug rehab center in Orlando, Florida. accordingly Associated Press. Shortly thereafter, prosecutors announced 27 new charges against Murdaugh for allegedly stealing nearly $5 million from multiple victims.
In the months leading up to Murdaugh’s indictment for the murders of his wife and son, prosecutors assembled dozens of indictments alleging the disgraced lawyer stole millions of dollars from clients and victims’ families to sustain his addiction to pain pills.

He was charged with the deaths of Maggie and Paul on July 14, 2022, sparking a months-long trial that resulted in a guilty verdict.
Murdaugh was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in 2023 for killing his wife and son. He also faces an additional 40 years in prison for his financial crimes and remains in custody at a maximum security prison in South Carolina; This marks the end of a legal dynasty that ruled the Lowcountry for decades.
Murdaugh’s attorney, the prosecution and Hulu did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
“I think overall most people understand that,” Tinsley told Fox News Digital. “Most people understand, and most people see through his web of lies and deceit.”
