3 Indians Dead, One Injured in Mozambique Boat Mishap

Map: Three Indian nationals died, one was injured and five were rescued in a boat accident off Mozambique’s Beira coast, the Indian High Commission said on Saturday. The accident occurred on Thursday.
In a social media post, the Indian delegation expressed its “sincere condolences for the loss of life, including three Indian citizens” in the boat accident off the port of Beira.
It was stated that the mission is in contact with the families of those who lost their lives in the accident and is trying to provide them with all possible assistance.
In another post, the High Commission said a Consular Officer from the mission visited an Indian national who survived the crash and was receiving medical care at a hospital in Beira.
The statement stated that “five more Indian citizens were rescued.”
The launch boat carrying the crew of a tanker, including 14 Indian citizens, capsized during crew transfer operations in Beira port in central Mozambique, the High Commission said in a press release on Friday.
No detailed information has yet been given about the cause of the accident and the total number of people on board.
India and Mozambique have close diplomatic and economic relations.
About 20,000 Mozambican citizens trace their ancestors to India, according to the High Commission website. Most of them are from Gujarat, Goa, Daman and Diu.
There are approximately 3,000 Indian citizens working in various Indian companies in the country or working professionally in Mozambican companies. It was stated that the Indian diaspora is mostly engaged in wholesale and retail trade.
