World Triathlon: GB’s Beth Potter for third overall as Germany’s Lisa Tertsch wins world title

While Great Britain’s Beth Potter had to settle for third place in the overall standings, Lisa Tertsch claimed her first world triathlon title.

Tertsch won the gold medal at the World Triathlon Championship final in Wollongong, Australia, with a time of one hour, 56 minutes, 50 seconds.

The 26-year-old German finished 14 seconds ahead of Italian Bianca Seregni and 12 seconds behind French Emma Lombardi.

Tertsch collected 1250 points by winning the event and took his overall score to 3886.26, beating defending French champion Cassandre Beaugrand (3577.04) and Potter (3313.18).

Olympic bronze medalist Potter bid to win the title for a second time following victory in 2023 but could only finish 16th in the final competition.

The 33-year-old Scot was joint leader with Beaugrand before the start of the event but Tertsch, who finished fourth, put in a superb performance to seal the victory.

Beaugrand lost ground early in the 10km run in hot and windy conditions, while Potter was unable to keep up with the leading group, allowing Tertsch to gain ground while succeeding on a steep course.

In the men’s category, Australian Matt Hauser completed a successful season by clinching his first world championship success by winning gold with a time of 1:42:42.

Hauser finished the race with 4,250 points, just ahead of Brazilian Miguel Hidalgo and Portuguese Vasco Vilaca.
