10 best ‘mega airports’ in North America 2025

Last month, JD Power published its annual publication North American Airport Satisfaction Survey for 2025.

Mega airports are defined as airports that carry 33 million or more passengers per year. The study measured overall passenger satisfaction by examining their experience across seven key dimensions in order of importance:

1. Ease of travel at the airport
2. Level of confidence in the airport
3. Terminal facilities
4. airport staff
5. Getting to/from the airport experience
6. Food, beverage and retail
7. Airport arrival/experience from the airport

The 2025 survey is based on 30,439 completed surveys of U.S. or Canadian residents traveling from at least one U.S. or Canadian airport and covers both departure and arrival experiences (including connecting airports) in the past 30 days. The study was conducted from July 2024 to July 2025.

“While the annual growth rate in passenger volume appears to have plateaued, we are still seeing record numbers of travelers passing through the nation’s airports, and for the most part, they are enjoying the experience,” Michael Taylor, practice leader of airport research at J.D. Power, said in a press release.

Just like in 2024, the top three airports remain the same, which isn’t surprising, Taylor tells CNBC Make It.

“The three winning airports performed solidly in what I call interception and challenge. It’s about getting to the airport, is the bathroom clean? Is TSA fast? That kind of thing, and the most important part is food, beverage and retail, which are generally the biggest swing factors in the study,” he says.

Taylor says air travel has been affected by the ongoing government shutdown, but the satisfaction rankings of mega airports in this year’s report have not yet changed.

His biggest advice during this time is that travelers should be prepared to not go anywhere.

“Prepare to not be up in the air and see any further delays,” he said. “People will react negatively to that and that will affect satisfaction, but it’s usually pretty intermittent. It doesn’t last forever and we haven’t seen a huge impact.”

The airport served more than 37 million passengers in 2024, making it the 18th busiest airport in North America in terms of number of passengers served annually. MSP’s website.

According to the report of travel data analysis firm Cirium, the airport became the most punctual airport in the world in 2023.
