Australia’s digital governance recognised by the OECD

Australia has emerged as a global digital pioneer, ranking fifth in the OECD’s Digital Government Index for its innovative, citizen-focused governance. Paul Budde reports.

The country’s rise in digital governance is supported by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (Organization) (OECD) Digital Government Index (DGI).

DGIA comprehensive assessment of digital government strategies and initiatives, this report serves as a barometer of nations’ progress in adopting digital technologies to advance people-centered and user-centered policies.

The evaluation is based on six dimensions. OECD Digital Government Policy Framework:

  1. digital by design;
  2. data-driven public sector;
  3. government as a platform;
  4. on by default;
  5. user focused; And
  6. proactiveness (see notes).

DGI It is a composite index that takes values ​​from 0 to 1; where 1 indicates highest digital government maturity and 0 indicates low and/or fragmented progress across organizations.

Australia took the prestigious fifth place out of 38 participating countries. The evaluation period, which runs from January 2020 to October 2022, evaluates Australia’s multifaceted strengths, OECD Digital Government Policy Framework.

Australia achieved an overall score of 75.3%, well ahead of the OECD average of 60.5%.

The new authoritarianism: AI turns convenience into control

Australia scored highly against:

  • Digital by design, 97%. Examining the government’s willingness to use digital solutions to facilitate interaction with citizens.
  • Data-driven, 77%. Reviewed how effectively Australia has established the management, access, sharing and reuse of data for service delivery.
  • Acts as a platform, 74%. In order for public officials to effectively deliver important services, it is necessary to measure their access to digital solutions.
  • User-focused, 83%. How effectively does Australia place people’s needs and comfort at the heart of service delivery?
  • Proactive, 75%. It explores how well Australia is proactively meeting the rapid response needs of its citizens.

The OECD’s recognition of Australia’s commitment to cybersecurity and digital workforce development further strengthens Australia’s leading position in the global digital landscape. Australia has strengthened its digital infrastructure through regulatory measures and strategic investments, providing resilience and security in an increasingly connected world.

Joint studies under the leadership of the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) and various government departments aim to address emerging challenges and take advantage of new opportunities offered by advancing technologies.
