Anthony Hopkins reveals epiphany that ended his drinking 50 years ago

Anthony Hopkins detailed the life-changing epiphany he had that changed the course of his life forever.

Hopkins, who has been sober for almost 50 years, recalled the moment he stopped drinking alcohol and started living with purpose.

The Academy Award-winning actor admitted that during the depths of his alcoholism, he was “drinking like it was going out of style.”

during sitting with “Report” Hopkins stated that he was hesitant to tell the story for fear of appearing “preachy or a goody-two-shoes.”

“I was drunk, driving through a power outage in California; I had no idea where I was going,” Hopkins said.

“There was a moment when I realized I could kill someone or myself, which I didn’t care about, but I could kill a family in a car. I realized I was an alcoholic. I came to my senses and said to a former agent at a party in Beverly Hills, ‘I need help.'”

“I made the fatal phone call to a group from a 12-step program in Los Angeles. They said, ‘We’ll send someone to meet you,’ and I said, ‘No, I’ll come to you.'”

When Hopkins arrived at the meeting, he heard a “deep, powerful thought” that told him: “It’s all over. You can start living now, and it was all for a purpose, so don’t forget even a moment of it.”

The urge to drink disappeared almost immediately, Hopkins said.

“I don’t know anything or have any theories other than divinity or whatever it is that we all have within us and that creates us from birth – the life force. I believe it’s a consciousness. That’s all I know. That’s been my whole life,” he said.

Hopkins said he drank it “to neutralize this discomfort or whatever it was inside me, because it made me feel big. You know, drinking is awesome because it instantly makes you feel in a different space, and I enjoyed it.”

He recalled thinking to himself before sobering up: “This is going to kill me… I was drinking like it was going out of style.”

In December, the “Silence of the Lambs” star reminisced about her decades of sobriety in a video shared to Instagram.

“So 49 years ago today I stopped… and I was having so much fun, but then I realized my head was big, very big, because I couldn’t remember anything,” he said. “I was driving drunk, which went out of my skull. Then on that fatal day, I realized I needed help. So I got help.”

He added: “If you have a problem – having fun is great, drinking is good – but if you have a problem with drinking there is help. It’s not a bad thing, it’s a condition. If you’re allergic to alcohol, get some help. There’s a lot of help around.”

After celebrating his sobriety, Hopkins admitted: “I’ve had a great life. They still hire me, they still give me work.”

“I celebrate my long life, my unexpectedly long life,” he added.
