Man, 72, dies after woman allegedly cut gas to two Sydney hospitals

An elderly man has died after a woman claimed two Sydney hospitals had cut off essential gas services.

Police allege the woman entered Sutherland Hospital in Caringbah shortly after midnight on Tuesday before cutting off gas and water mains and activating fire hoses.

A little more than an hour later, the woman allegedly entered the premises of a private hospital on the same street and also cut off the gas network.

Police were told that afternoon that a 72-year-old man had died at one of the hospitals around 2.30am the same day.

Doctors have issued a death certificate and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The investigation into the man’s death continues.

The 42-year-old woman was later charged and refused bail to appear before Sutherland Local Court on Wednesday.

He is charged with entering the designated premises of any person without lawful excuse, sabotage, destruction or damage to property and breach of bail.

He also faces charges of tampering with fire alarm or fire signaling devices and trespassing on protected premises in relation to a separate incident at a hostel in Darlinghurst on Monday.

The woman was not charged in the man’s death.
