Perth judge to determine fate in bikie’s murder case
David Pye’s hatred of ‘toxic’ former Rebel cyclist boss Nick Martin led him to hire an assassin, prosecutors claimed as final hearings in the high-profile murder case began.
Prosecutor Justin Whalley acknowledged much of the state’s case was based on evidence from the sniper who shot Martin at the Perth Motorplex in December 2020, but secret recordings from Pye’s home, financial records and text exchanges supported the sniper’s story that he was paid $150,000 to carry out the killing.

In his closing submissions to the trial in the Supreme Court of Western Australia on Wednesday, Whalley explained why Pye should be found guilty of every charge against him, including Martin’s murder and ordering him to hit two other men, a former partner and another cycling rival.
At the single-judge hearing, he recalled statements Pye made after the murder, which were recorded on secret tapes at his home.
“The only good thing that happened that day was the shooting of Nick Martin,” he said.

Pye nodded at the dock as Whalley spoke.
“The defendant was filled with hatred and disdain for Nick Martin. He can’t stop talking about him,” Whalley said.
Pye also referred to the former Rebels chairman as a “fat, toxic piece of shit” and said he was “a forgotten can of worms at the bottom of Karrakatta cemetery”.
