Lawrence O’Donnell Rips Republicans for Vacationing More During Shutdown Than ‘Most Americans Get in 3 Years’

Lawrence O’Donnell On Tuesday night, congressional Republicans were torn over their behavior during the government shutdown, which is scheduled to exceed the 30-day mark this week. He particularly noted how many holidays right-wing politicians had taken during this stalemate.

O’Donnell initially directed her anger at House Speaker Mike Johnson and the “recess” Republicans allowed during the shutdown. “House Speaker Mike Johnson rewarded House Republicans for shutting down the government by giving them permanent paid leave, now in its sixth week and could last for months,” O’Donnell said on Tuesday’s “Afterword.”

“Johnson sent them on vacation more than a week before the government shutdown,” the MSNBC host explained. Notably, he is not the only prominent public figure to criticize Republicans for taking a “vacation” during the shutdown. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also accused some of his Republican counterparts of not working around the clock to resolve the shutdown.

“They’ve had more holidays this year than most Americans have in three years,” O’Donnell lamented. “Republican members of the House have not worked a day since Mike Johnson led the government shutdown.” You can watch the entire “Last Word” episode for yourself in the video below.

In the second half of the segment, O’Donnell extended her disdain to President Trump. The “Last Word” host called out Trump and Republicans for failing to end the shutdown in time to prevent Americans from running out of SNAP benefits.

“After starting the year by allowing Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, to shut down the United States Agency for International Development so that starving children in the midst of famine in Africa would receive American food supplies,” O’Donnell recalls, “Republicans 1761763883 “We were chosen to bring the spirit of this policy home and provide food for children in need of food stamp assistance.”

“40% of people fed by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are children,” O’Donnell concluded. “We are now on the cusp of, for the first time in the 21st century, millions of people in America and children in America truly knowing what hunger means. Republicans did that.”
