Another SIR Death In WB, Didi Vows To Fight ‘Till Last Drop Of Blood’

Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has vowed to fight “to the last drop of blood” for the “rights” of the people after another man ended his life for fear of deportation after the Election Commission announced special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in the Assembly poll-bound state.
The last victim, Khitish Majumder (95), was from Korapara village in Kotwali in West Midnapore. He was staying at his daughter’s house in Schoolbagan Subhaspally in Birbhum’s Iambazar for the last five months. On Thursday morning, Majumder was hanging dead in a room there.
“He was anxious for the last few days fearing that he would be deported from the border as his name was not included in the 2002 SIR list,” said family member Nirmala Majumder. Superintendent of Police (Birbhum) Amandeep said, “It was revealed that the reason for the suicide was the deceased’s fear regarding SIR.”
In the afternoon, Ms. Banerjee posted on X-handle: “We are witnessing the tragic consequences of the BJP’s politics of fear, division and hatred. Within 72 hours of the Election Commission announcing the SIR exercise in Bengal – This exercise was demolished at the behest of the BJP. Avoidable tragedies have occurred one after the other.”
He later observed: “On 27 October, 57-year-old Pradeep Kar of Khardaha Panihati died by suicide, leaving behind a note saying “NRC is responsible for my death.” On 28 October, 63-year-old Cooch Behar from Dinhata, fearing harassment under the SIR process, tried to take his life. And today, 95-year-old from Kotwali, Paschim Medinipur, who lives with his daughter in Iambazar, Birbhum.” “Kitish Majumder ended his life out of fear that he and his family’s land might be taken away.”
CM said, “Who will be held accountable for these politically avoidable tragedies? Will the Home Minister accept responsibility? Will the BJP and its allies, under whose watch this fear psychosis has spread, find the courage to speak out? A 95-year-old man, who gave his life for this land, was forced to die to prove that he belonged to this land. What could be a deeper wound in the conscience of the nation? This is not just a tragedy, but a betrayal of humanity itself.”
“The people of Bengal have lived with dignity for generations. Today, they are still forced to ask whether they belong to the land of their birth. This cruelty is unconscionable and should not be allowed. I appeal to every citizen: Do not be provoked, do not lose faith and do not take an extreme step. Our Maa-Mati-Manush Sarkar is with you.”
The Trinamul Congress summit claimed: “We will not allow the implementation of NRC in Bengal either from the front door or the back door. We will not allow a single legitimate citizen to be branded as a ‘foreigner’. We will fight till the last drop of our blood to protect the rights of the people and defeat the treacherous plans of the BJP and its allies to tear apart the social fabric of our nation.”
Opposing the CM, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya claimed: “Mamata Banerjee’s blatant lies regarding the tragic suicide of 57-year-old Pradeep Kar of Panihati have already been exposed as she shamelessly tried to link his death with the NRC. Now, she has outdone herself by stooping to a much lower level! This time, she is politicizing the death of 95-year-old Kitish Majumdar. falsely linking it with SIR and NRC fears.”
He claimed: “It is astonishing that she so arrogantly assumes that the people of Bengal are gullible enough to believe her lies… If Mamata Banerjee insists on making up stories to stoke fear and stall the SIR, she should at least rationalize them. Her current script is nothing but a desperate, hollow hoax – written for electoral gains and aimed at insulting the intelligence of Bengal and the spirit of democracy itself.”
