Tesco announces major new change for trolleys and baskets at checkout | UK | News

Tesco is trying to make a big change to combat theft in its stores. Scan as you shop customers will now be asked to use treadle scales for trolleys to see if the number of items matches the number of items they put in the basket.

If the numbers match, customers will be able to easily pay for their purchases. However, if they fail to do so, a member of staff will manually scan the items to check if nothing has been stolen.

The new scales can also be used for baskets.

The change is being trialled at the Gateshead Trinity Square Extra store in Gateshead, near Newcastle.

However, some customers are not happy with this change.

One customer said: “Me and my partner tried this a few times and it didn’t work every time so staff had to re-scan every item in our full trolley so we don’t save time.”

A second customer said online: “Since when does Tesco have a scale? Does Tesco have a scale???”

A third joked: “Am I at border control or at Tesco?”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are running a trial in a very small number of stores to help our Scan as You Shop customers ensure they do not miss any items when scanning.

“This will reduce the number of manual checks by colleagues, reduce queuing times and streamline the checkout experience for customers.”
