Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., joined Lara Trump in an “My View” interview on Saturday to discuss why he believes it’s so important to talk to both sides of the political divide.
Recently, the Pennsylvania senator has broken ranks with his party on issues such as the confirmation of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, support for the Laken Riley Border Security Act and U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
What stands out now is his stance on shutting down the government.
“Whether it’s Republican or Democrat, whatever caused the shutdown, it’s always wrong,” Fetterman said. “You may have a noble cause, but it is the wrong tactic.”
FETTERMAN APOLOGIZED FOR DEMOCRATS DIDN’T BRING THEM TOGETHER AND OPENED THE GOVERNMENT.
He said he was trying to bridge the deepening political divide with the “purple” state he represents.
“I don’t just represent Democrats,” Fetterman said. “I represent 13 million Pennsylvanians.”
He also emphasized the importance of working on legislation with his Republican colleagues. Following the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., on the Laken Riley Act. formed a partnership with.
“He reached out and said, would you like to co-sponsor?”
“I am very, very pro-immigrant, always have been,” he said. But he acknowledged that his party had “done a poor job” of securing the border.
Fetterman and Britt also introduced the Stop Scroll Act, which would require social media companies to add mental health warning labels to their platforms.

As for the attacks in Iran, Fetterman is proud to support them.
“How can we allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons?” Fetterman thought. “This would change the Middle East for the worst.”
It was also heralded that the attacks would create conditions for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Fetterman praised it as a geopolitical success for President Donald Trump and thinks his own party is hesitant to celebrate it.
FETTERMAN SAID HE KNOWS AND LOVES TRUMP VOTERS: ‘I AM THE ONLY DEMOCRAT IN MY FAMILY’
The Pennsylvania senator also discussed his January dinner with the president, describing a positive conversation in which they found common ground.
“This is not about kneeling,” he said.
Labeling political opponents as “Nazis” or “fascists” only deepens the divide, Fetterman said, because it “implies that the people who vote for them must be the same.”

He warned that harsh rhetoric had worsened following the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
“I refuse to believe the worst about the other side because I know it’s not true,” Fetterman said.
“We forget that [Republicans and Democrats] “We need each other,” he added.
