Jennifer Lawrence explains why she’s avoiding politics during second Trump term

“The Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence explained in an interview with The New York Times podcast “The Interview” on Saturday why she has refrained from commenting on President Donald Trump and politics in general since the start of his second term.

When host Lulu Garcia-Navarro asked how she felt about commenting on politics today, Lawrence replied: “I don’t know if I should. The first Trump administration was so brutal and unfair, how can we allow this? I felt like I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off. But as we’ve learned, election after election, celebrities make no difference in who people vote for.”

“So what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that will fuel the fire that’s tearing the country apart,” he continued. “We are so divided.”

As Garcia-Navarro noted, Lawrence was an outspoken critic of Trump during his first term, even writing an op-ed after Election Day in 2016, arguing that Trump’s victory meant “the only people who feel safe.” [in America]White men whose rights are recognized and respected.”

Lawrence told the podcast host that she was in a “complex recalibration” when it came to expressing her political views, noting that she was an artist and didn’t want to alienate her audience.

“With this heat and the way things are going, I don’t want to start turning people off to movies and art that could change their consciousness or change the world because they don’t like my political views,” the actress said. “I want to preserve my craft so that you can still get lost in what I do. And if I can’t say something that will convey some kind of peace, some kind of lowering of the temperature, or some kind of solution, I don’t want to be part of the problem.”

“You watch the faces of these players who have had incredible careers and made incredible contributions, and half the internet doesn’t want to see their faces anymore. I feel so bad for these people and it feels so wrong,” he added.

Lawrence, who no longer plans to publicly voice his political views, said he still shares his beliefs through the art he produces.

“I try to express my politics through my work,” he told Garcia-Navarro. “A lot of the films that come out of my production company are expressions of the political climate, and I feel like I can help in that way.”

Looking back on some political comments he’s made in the past, Lawrence admitted there were some views he regretted sharing.

“I regret everything I’ve done or said. When I leave, I’ll take out the zip drives of all these cameras,” he joked. “The second term feels different. Because he said what he was going to do. We knew for four years what he was going to do. It was very clear. That’s what we chose.”
