This mind-bending Malayalam horror thriller recovers its budget in 3 days, surpasses Baahubali, Marco; has earned.., it is…

Malayalam cinema has proven its worth once again and Pranav Mohanlal’s Dies Irae is one of the films that created history by beating even the biggest films at the box office.

I say when it comes to effective cinema on a limited budget, no one can beat the Malayalam film industry. They are among the rare film fraternity that churns out the best movies at such a limited cost. Over the years, there have been critically acclaimed blockbusters that have left producers with truckloads of money. The latest example in this caravan is Dies Irae. Directed by Rahul Sadasivan, the psychological horror thriller stars superstar Mohanlal’s son Pranav Mohanlal in the lead role and has set a new standard in the genre.

Irae dies, defeats Baahubali and Marco

Dies Irae, which was released in theaters on October 31 with optional paid previews on October 30, recorded an opening day of over Rs 10 million worldwide. According to reports, this is a strong start for a horror movie. Dies Irae has already surpassed Unni Mukundan’s action blockbuster Marco by scoring the biggest opening for an A-list film in the box office history of Malayalam cinema.

The small-budget Dies Irae surpassed the blockbuster Baahubali even in its first week. The new remake of SS Rajamouli’s pan-India blockbuster has been launched with Dies Irae, a combination of two parts into one EPIC. The Malayalam remake of Baahubali: The Epic scored less than Dies Irae. Sounds unreal, right?

According to reports, Dies Irae (Malayalam) collected around Rs 16.75 crore nett domestically in its first three days. Whereas, the Malayalam version of Baahubali: The Epic could only earn Rs 52 lakh in the first three days.

About Dies Irae

Dies Irae follows Rohan (Pranav Mohanlal), whose comfortable city life begins to crumble after his newly built home is invaded by a series of spooky, unexplained events. What starts with mild discomfort soon turns into an intense psychological depression. Rohan becomes obsessed with the idea that his house is haunted by a sinister entity. His family and friends think he’s losing his grip on reality, but Rohan insists there’s something much darker at play.
