In a new editorial, the Washington Post accused Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani of offering “failed social policy experiments” in what may be the city’s most “radical” mayor yet.
“Zohran Mamdani is on the verge of becoming New York’s 111th mayor and perhaps the most radical,” the board warned ahead of Tuesday’s elections, in which Mamdani is favored to win.
“Free-market supporters have failed to make their case clearly in New York, and Mamdani’s success is a wake-up call to business-friendly Democrats that they must do better,” he added, asking in disbelief: “How did a socialist with virtually no government experience become the leader of the New York City mayoralty?”

From free childcare and public transport to rent freezes on city apartments, Mamdani’s economic policies and other ambitious plans attracted a lot of attention at a time when the Democratic Party was in the political wilderness.
“There appear to be enough voters to put him in office, but if New Yorkers start fleeing in droves, that could force him to moderate,” the Post wrote.
New Yorkers have been repeatedly reminded of his “long history of radical politics,” the Post said, noting his past rhetoric about Israel and defunding the police.
“It suggests that the republication of a long list of failed social policy experiments is more worthy of a midnight bull session at Bowdoin College than a serious political platform,” the board wrote.

Mamdani’s policies have excited progressives, but they have also sparked criticism that they could be devastating for New York City if she becomes the next mayor.
“It demands all of this,” Michael Toth, a research assistant at the University of Texas at Austin Civitas Institute, told Fox News Digital. “Who’s going to pay for all this? The governor of New York has already said tax increases are off the table.”
The Post stated that “the Democratic Party is up for grabs now and in 2028” after noting that Democrats’ “relatively moderate gubernatorial candidates in New Jersey and Virginia better reflect the party’s future.”

The piece encouraged Mamdani to take a more gradual approach “rather than immediately imposing his most radical ideas on the entire city.”
