Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool mural defaced before Anfield return

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s mural was vandalized as the Real Madrid right-back prepared to face his former club Liverpool on Tuesday.

Some fans booed the Liverpool academy product in May after he announced he would leave his hometown club when his contract expires in June.

The 27-year-old has joined Real Madrid and has earned the right to face Liverpool away in the league stage of this season’s Champions League.

The mural of the England defender was opened near Anfield after Liverpool became European champions in 2019, and was vandalized with the word “Mouse” written on it at the beginning of this year.

The same word was rewritten many times on Tuesday, along with ‘adios el rata’.

White paint was also thrown over the mural, but the graffiti was soon erased from the mural.

On Monday, Alexander-Arnold was among a group of Real Madrid representatives who visited Diogo Jota’s Anfield monument and laid flowers in memory of his former Liverpool team-mate.

Speaking before Tuesday’s game, Alexander-Arnold said: “It is up to the fans to decide how I am received.

“I will always love the club, I will always be a fan of the club. I will always be grateful for the opportunities and the things we achieved together; they will live with me forever.”

Alexander-Arnold won the Champions League, two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup during his time at Liverpool.

The club has been approached for comment.
