King Charles’ longest-serving staff members notice ‘change’ in monarch | Royal | News

King Charles’ long-serving staff in the Royal Family have detected a major ‘change’ in the monarch’s temperament, a royal writer has claimed.

Charles has been king for more than three years, the longest heir apparent in English history.

Not long into her reign, the monarch was diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer, which led to a marked change in her behavior, according to royal expert Robert Jobson.

In his new book, The Windsor Legacy: A Royal Dynasty of Secrets, Scandal and Survival, he writes: “Indeed, their longer-serving staff detected a change in their employer, who they thought could seem rather cold at times.

“They say he’s become more emotional now.

“Not only that, it has changed some habits that once seemed immutable – thanks in large part to the advice of Dr Michael Dixon, an experienced NHS practitioner and advocate of complementary medicine, who was appointed head of the Royal Family of Medicine after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

“William also urged his father to slow down and listen to the medical team.”

Charles underwent a “corrective procedure” to treat benign prostate enlargement at the London Clinic in January 2024.

During this procedure, Buckingham Palace announced that cancer was discovered, but it was not prostate cancer.

His public engagements were postponed until April as he recovered from treatment to combat the disease. According to Jobson, Charles has since changed his lifestyle in various ways. He reportedly now takes regular afternoon naps.

After skipping meals for most of his life, he started eating lunch again. This usually consists of spinach soup. The monarch reportedly often joked with friends about reaching the “alarmingly worn-out stage” of his life.

Despite this, he continued to work hard while undergoing cancer treatment. In addition, Queen Camilla has also increased the number of royal engagements she performs.

Charles is still receiving regular treatment for his cancer and was briefly hospitalized in March 2025 after experiencing temporary side effects during his treatment.

To add insult to injury for the Royal Family, Princess Kate revealed her own cancer diagnosis shortly after Charles went public.

Meanwhile, according to Jobson, Prince William and his father “generally work well together,” although he claims there is “often tension between them.”

The royal author said: “It doesn’t help that they both have fiery tempers that can’t always be kept in check. Some staff say working for Charles can be like ‘treading on eggshells’.”

“They point to when Charles caught Covid for the second time in February 2022. He was preparing to head to Highgrove for the weekend at Clarence House, then still Prince of Wales, when two terrifying blue lines appeared.

“But when he was told he couldn’t travel back to his country, he went wild with excitement. He became frustrated, even threatening to drive himself down the M4. Alarmed royal aides, fearing the strict nationwide rules were being breached, decided they had to take action to avert possible disaster and hid his car keys.

“Eventually Charles calmed down and remained in London, adhering to government guidelines, until he became asymptomatic.”
