House Republican Says GOP Lost Big on Tuesday Because Its Voters ‘Are Happy With What’s Happening’
Representative Lisa McClain (R-MI) offered a new explanation Tuesday for why his party was narrowly defeated in races across the country: Republican voters were too happy with the status quo to bother voting.
On Tuesday, Democrats blew up the Virginia governor’s mansion and extended They have a majority in the state’s House of Representatives. They also retained control of the governorship of New Jersey and afflicted Pennsylvania Supreme Court. Voters in California approved a ballot measure that would allow the state legislature to redraw congressional districts to favor Democrats, after Texas enacted a similar initiative for Republicans. And in New York, voters elected a democratic socialist to become the city’s first Muslim mayor.
Appears in Wednesday’s issue Lead McClain was asked the following question on CNN: Jake Tapper About the election results.
“[I]If you look at what happened last night, it’s hard to tell it was there. anything in the election results – and I understand that, not only is New Jersey a Democratic state, but it’s hard to see that when I look at Republican counties, Republican sheriffs who lost their jobs. anything “Last night it was a confirmation of what the Republican party is doing right now,” he said.
McClain later noted that Republicans lost Tuesday because they did a good job:
Yes, let me tell you the other side of the story, Republican voter turnout was not high. It’s not high at all. But I think part of the reason is that Republicans are mostly happy with what’s going on. The border was closed, crime was down, inflation was nine percent under Biden. It is now down to three percent. Interest rates fell, housing loans fell…
I shop at stores where everyone else shops. Is there more work to be done? There definitely is. That’s why we did this with the tax cut for working families. We voted not to raise everyone’s taxes. It’s very different from what the Democrats are doing. So I think there are two sides to the coin that you have to look at. We have to do our part to ensure that our voters are the same as they were during the election year. No questions.
Tapper seemed unimpressed by this statement.
“I mean, using that argument, your voters could be so happy that the Democrats could take control of the House of Representatives next year,” he said.
“That’s right,” McClain replied. “And I’m optimistic that not only will we retain the majority, but that we will achieve the majority.”
