Mecca’s new store on Bourke Street has been busy since 7am; It’s packed with people getting their makeup, hair and nails done for Oaks Day.
Mecca founder Jo Horgan was in the store and said it had been busy all week, with people coming in through the secret entrance on Union Lane before opening hours.

“At the Atelier, we were flooded with people getting their hair, make-up and nails done at the same time,” she says. “They’re putting on make-up downstairs, everyone’s eyebrows are ‘just like that’ so the windows to the soul look as beautiful as possible.”
Florists at Flowers Vasette, which has a store in Mecca, are busy making headpieces and buttonholes out of fresh flowers for customers.
The 18 makeup chairs downstairs have been occupied since the early morning hours.

Kellie Parsons gets her make-up done ahead of her day at the champagne bar in the Members’ section of Victoria Racing Club, where a friend has booked early tickets.
Parsons is wearing a brown and white polka dot dress from Witchery and is going for a natural makeup look.
He says the spring racing carnival is “like Christmas for adults” and has also had some success in betting.
“We won the quaddie on Tuesday [at the Melbourne Cup]”So today we are ready to invest again,” he says.
