Greene praises Pelosi’s effectiveness, wishes GOP could deliver like her

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., praised Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after the former House Speaker announced she will retire from Congress.

Pelosi announced Thursday that she will retire when her term ends and will not seek reelection. When asked for her reaction by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Greene said her initial reaction was that she believed in term limits but praised Pelosi’s accomplishments in her four-decade career in the House.

“I was very impressed with his ability to get things done,” Greene said. “I wish we could get things done for our party the way Nancy Pelosi does for her party. So I wish her well in her retirement, but I’d like to see people leave Washington much sooner rather than waiting until they’re in their eighties.”

As the government shutdown continues to drag on, Greene accuses her own party’s leadership of failing to implement her “America First” agenda.

Republicans were defeated by their Democratic rivals in multiple elections this week, and some GOP leaders have downplayed those situations as exceptional cases. But Greene argued to CNN hosts that this was a “wake-up call” for the party to follow through on its promises to voters. Unlike Pelosi, he argued that Republican leaders have failed to deliver on the agenda they were elected to enact.

“I am America first, and I make no apologies for that, and I believe that Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, should serve the American people,” he said. “And when you campaign for America First, it’s like a restaurant advertising like a certain type of food, then you don’t do delivery for America First, then your customers come into your restaurant and the food is completely different and they say, ‘Wait a minute, that’s not what I came here for.’ You’re not going to have repeat customers.”

When asked what he would criticize or what he would do differently than Trump, he maintained that the president was not focused on the agenda he was elected to do.

“My criticism is not focused on America First, but I blame it in large part on our Congress because I serve in the House of Representatives. I also blame who is advising it in the White House,” he said. “You know, taking him on non-stop tours around the world and non-stop meetings with leaders of foreign countries, it’s not America First. It’s not at all. I think domestic policy should be the most important issue that the president and the Republican-controlled House and the Senate are working on. And that showed up in the elections on Tuesday.”

Asked whether Trump himself bears some responsibility, he said the “information silo” in which Trump is being kept is at fault.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

NANCY PELOSI LOSED HER COOL TO THE MEDIA FIVE TIMES

He noted that he had consistently called out GOP leadership throughout his career but never considered leaving the party.

“So not everyone may know this, but I ran for Congress in 2020, frustrated with my own party,” he recalled. “I think, like a lot of Republican candidates, they just kind of campaigned and when they came into power, they didn’t do anything or they never quite delivered on the promises they made to the American people. I think there are a lot of voters right now, and I think it showed on Tuesday that they really feel that way. I represent Americans who are done with foreign wars and foreign policy, who really want to focus on our own problems, our problems.”
